NERI presented at the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting in Washington DC

Andre Araujo, Ph.D., Director of Epidemiology, presented an invited Symposium presentation entitled “Are Men Losing Their Gonads?” at the 91st Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society. Featured prominently were key longitudinal data on changes in endocrine function from one of NERI’s long-running population-based studies, the Massachusetts Male Aging Study (MMAS). Dr. Araujo also presented a poster from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey on behalf of Varant Kupelian, Ph.D. showing that lower testosterone is significantly associated with C-reactive protein, a biomarker of inflammation and risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The increased inflammatory state observed in men with lower testosterone levels suggests that modulation of inflammatory processes may be a pathway by which androgens affect cardiometabolic risk.
