Safe Driving and Your Older Patients Continuing Education Program
Funded by National Institute of Aging

With funding from the National Institute of Aging, NERI has developed a Web-based continuing-education program regarding communicating with older patients about driving safety and driving cessation. The Safe Driving and Your Older Patients program is relevant for physicians and other health care professionals (e.g., nurse practitioners, physician assistants, optometrists) working with older adults and their families.

The specific learning objectives of the program are:

  • To enhance medical professionals’ knowledge of the epidemiology and predictors of driving accidents involving older adults;
  • To describe the health, legal, social, and emotional factors related to driving cessation in older adults; and
  • To develop effective communication skills that are specific to the needs of older patients and their family members who are concerned about safe driving.

The program includes six chapters, including 1) The Driving Dilemma; 2) Evaluation; 3) Successful Communication; 4) Medical Conditions and Driving; 5) Medications and Driving; 6) Legal Considerations. Each course maximizes use of Web interactive features, such as case studies, questions and answers with immediate feedback, photographs and audio, interactive charts and tables, hyperlinks to cited references and videotaped expert commentaries. The program has been approved for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™ by the Boston University School of Medicine. CE credits are provided upon successful completion of the online CE test.

The program is available at https://www.olderpatientsdrivingce.com.
