e-Source: Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Interactive Textbook

12-1-09 -- NERI is pleased to announce the completion of the interactive textbook for behavioral and social sciences research, e-Source. e-Source is an interactive, online anthology on research methods and tools for researchers engaging in BSS research on health-related topics. The textbook was created through a contract from the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research. Recognized international experts in their fields were enlisted to author the 14 chapters for this site. This project aims to:

  • Demonstrate the potential of BSS research to enhance biomedical research,
  • Serve as a resource center for the most current and high quality BSS research methods;
  • Reveal how to easily and efficiently obtain authoritative answers to methodological questions, and
  • Identify consistent and rigorous quality standards for the research community.

 NERI presented at the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting in Washington DC, June 2009

Andre Araujo, Ph.D., Director of Epidemiology, presented an invited Symposium presentation entitled “Are Men Losing Their Gonads?” at the 91st Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society. Featured prominently were key longitudinal data on changes in endocrine function from one of NERI’s long-running population-based studies, the Massachusetts Male Aging Study (MMAS). Dr. Araujo also presented a poster from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey on behalf of Varant Kupelian, Ph.D. showing that lower testosterone is significantly associated with C-reactive protein, a biomarker of inflammation and risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The increased inflammatory state observed in men with lower testosterone levels suggests that modulation of inflammatory processes may be a pathway by which androgens affect cardiometabolic risk.
